These loving angels were designed especially for the Palmetto Painters of Columbia, S.C. to paint on "Memory Boxes" as a service project. The finished boxes are presented to local hospitals where they are given to parents who have lost a child at birth or at a young age. A special place for memories and treasures.

Preparation:
Clean paper mache' box well or sand and seal a wooden box, then sand lightly again. Basecoat with 2 or 3 coats of JoSonja's* Sky Blue Background Color. Lightly sand with a piece of heavy brown grocery bag paper. Wipe with tack cloth. Paint inside of cover but not inside of box. Directions for lining box will be given later. Be sure to paint edges of both box and cover.
Using a small tip stylus or 4H pencil, transfer the line drawing with white transfer paper and a light touch.
Remember:
It is wise to have a piece of cardboard painted with your background color. Use this to test your color mixes on. Just because it looks right on the palette does not mean it is right for your background. Everything relates to what is around it and your mixes may need to be adjusted.
When painting tiny faces or objects, use tiny brushes that fit the area. A magnifying glass will also help. Any tool that makes your task easier is worth using
Developing the painting:
When painting a person, eyes seem to be the most important. Painting these first helps to create a personality. Using thin coats of paint, carefully place the values. Proper blending on small faces and hands will help keep the desired shape. Work through the design in the order listed. Stage one will develop the forms, and stage two will give detail and add more life.
When painting, remember that darks make objects recede while lights bring them forward.
Let the painting cure well before varnishing. Any stage three adjustments may be made at any time before the final varnish is applied.
Beginning the painting:
Rouge in some light tints near top corners and sides of your box to detract from the solid blue. This softens and adds interest.
PINK -  TW and touch of LRO                            GREEN -  TW and touch of CGO
Place these colors sparingly and fade them out by rubbing in a circular motion from below up into color with a LINT FREE tissue.
Outline features, arms and hands on the White angel and baby with dark flesh; on the African American with BU.

Painting order:
Outline features on angel and baby. Paint eyes, then place flesh colors and blend. Add detail to faces. Place flesh colors on arms and hands and blend. Paint wings, dress sleeves, hair and baby blanket. Then paint dress and bunnies. Clouds and the halo are last. Be sure hair is dry before painting halo.
Eyes:
Using a 3/0 detail brush, place iris. Stroke through the left side of this with a 10/0 liner. This will leave a dark area as the pupil. Carefully fill in the whites and highlight the iris with a tiny dot of TW.
Place flesh mixtures according to chart and carefully blend using small blender or filbert brush. After blending is completed, add stage two details: blush, eyelashes, nostrils etc. Additional shading and highlighting should be glazed in when dry as stage three to avoid a "milky" look. If you need to pick up any excess paint, place a single layer of tissue over area and gently mop lift tissue.
Wings:
Place PG shading and overstroke with TW & touch YM mixture using a filbert brush.
Blend where needed. When dry, glaze with PG to darken, and TW to highlight.

Baby blanket:
Place PG for shading and fill in with a mixture of TW & touch YM. Blend to create form. Add stripes in desired colors. Soften by blotting with one layer of tissue and mop brush. Soften more if needed with mop brush. After blanket is dry, add highlights with glazing medium and TW.

Continue on with dress skirt as in picture remembering that the light is coming from the upper left. When dress and sleeves are dry, reinforce darks and highlights where necessary.
Bunnies:
Place RU for shading and fill in bodies and faces with TW & YM mixture blend.  Hair is TW using a rake brush. Inside of ears, the eyes and noses are dark dress pink shaded with LRO & RU. Highlight with light dress pink. Outline eyes and detail toes with RU. Refer to picture if necessary.
Clouds:
Place shading in with PG. Form shapes with SFTW & YM mixture. Gently blend.
Highlight with dabs of SFTW using a filbert brush and small amounts of paint. Soften in
as needed.
Halo is YM shaded with LRO and highlighted with TW.  Be sure hair is dry before painting halo!
Finishing:
Paint clouds on outer sides of box as desired.
To line box: Using light weight poster board cut individual pieces for each side and bottom. Cut slightly smaller than actual measurements.
Cut fabric of your choice about 3/4"  larger all around than each cardboard piece. Lay cardboard on wrong side of fabric and run a bead of quick drying glue around all edges of the cardboard and fold fabric tightly over onto the glue. When dry, glue in place inside of box with fabric showing, one section at a time. Glue bottom piece in last.
A pattern is also included for a "scroll" that can be glued to the inside cover where the parents can write any pertinent information of their choosing. 1 used a blue parchment paper for this and glued some to the bottom of the box also.
